From June 16 to June 30, 2021, 60+ TechSoup Global Network partners gathered online, linking 650 participants from 63 countries to learn, share, and improve capacity to support nonprofits that improve lives around the world. As a first-time virtual event (which usually takes place every two years in San Francisco), it was by far the largest convening of the network in history. The TechSoup Global Network serves 1.3 million NGOs and is the largest civil society network in the world. …

As a man of a certain age now, I’m sad to say that I’m retiring from TechSoup. So I’m eager to do one of my favorite things in all the world — report on what’s next for nonprofit technology. We’re hopefully on the recovery side of the pandemic now in the U.S. NGOs in other countries are not nearly as fortunate, where the disease still rages and vaccines remain scarce. COVID-19 has dramatically changed nonprofit technology.

Organizations have become smaller and leaner; adoption of cloud-based tools has accelerated to enable…

One in four American adults has a disability that impacts major life activities. Often these disabilities include communication challenges, like hearing and vision loss, sensory processing disorders, and difficulty speaking clearly. After years of slow steps to include people with communications challenges in workplaces, schools, and services, the COVID pandemic resulted in a giant leap backward.

As a nonprofit where communications accessibility is the core of our mission, Ability Central regularly hosts meetings with participants who are deaf, blind, have sensory processing issues, or have difficulties speaking. Our board chairperson…

With the limited budgets that many nonprofits struggle with, prioritizing initiatives like marketing and website development can seem nonessential. However, there are many benefits to implementing a growth-driven approach to modernizing your marketing and website strategies.

Allocating a yearly budget allows your nonprofit to create enough momentum to measure the success of your different forms of promotion over time. Your organization can develop processes and grow your outreach by allowing these powerful tools to be optimized and utilized.

Why Should Nonprofits Prioritize Marketing?

Marketing is the driving force behind your organization’s impact. It’s the tool…

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the daily operations for many nonprofits all over the world. With organizations quickly needing to adapt to a remote way of working, how will this change the way nonprofits operate? What’s the strategy for post-pandemic planning? How can we work with volunteers remotely? These are all common questions we’ve heard many organizations ask in recent months, and on May 5, 2021, we held another Public Good App House event to address them.

We were joined by four inspiring teams using tech to help nonprofits respond to COVID-19 challenges.

  • COVID-19 Vaccine Standby…

If you follow my work, you may have noticed that my advice on writing a grant proposal usually focuses on the written part — called the “narrative” section. But a full grant proposal actually has at least one other component: the budget. Both parts are crucial to grant success and, along with administrative pieces, comprise a total grant proposal package.

Your grant proposal narrative will point the way to your proposal budget; the process is straightforward. In fact, the more directly your narrative flows to the budget the better.

The good news is that the budget is usually much shorter…

There are an astonishing number of U.S. charities working in healthcare — just under 40,000. Some of the largest nonprofits in the country work in this field, which comprises over 12 percent of the charitable sector. Add to that the organizations that work in some way with health records and the number goes up even more.

HIPAA is the body of U.S. law that makes the rules for the safe, secure handling of protected health information. Below we’ll say a bit about what HIPAA compliance entails for organizations working with…

For many nonprofits, staying informed of cybersecurity threats can be a challenge — along with prioritizing their response to them. This is especially true in light of how the landscape of threats is ever-evolving. Those involved in the hacking world continually find new ways around our traditional defenses. Staying on top of trends and threats is therefore an important aspect of any risk management strategy — and essential as it relates to cybersecurity.

As we read news headlines about significant cyber incidents that expose private data or compromise critical infrastructure…

It’s no surprise that video conferencing platforms gained popularity during the pandemic. While COVID-19 changed the mode of living for many of us, the pace of life hasn’t really slowed down. Whether you are meeting a new client, holding a weekly check-in, or even adding new hires at your nonprofit, video conferencing likely helped you complete these tasks.

This post will touch on the psychology behind video conferencing and how we can better connect with our colleagues in a distant virtual space. We had the pleasure of speaking with Susan Comfort, who is the founder of Comfort Consulting. She also…

For small nonprofits struggling to keep pace with day-to-day work, planning ahead can seem like a luxury. Especially when it comes to IT asset maintenance: If everything is functioning well right now, why mess with it?

But a little work now can save a lot of work in the future. It can also prevent downtime, security incidents, and other issues that can hurt your organization.

What is proactive asset maintenance? Essentially, it refers to the practice of using your knowledge about your IT environment to effectively deploy new hardware and…
